“The problem for a lot of theatres and live music venues is when they were built and constructed they weren’t anywhere near residential property. Now of course with everything being redeveloped, flats are coming in where they weren’t there before,” he told The Stage.<\/p>\n
“This issue of sound and noise and theatres living in close proximity is going to start being a big issue. We’re only a small example of that and I’m sure there are going to be more,” he added.<\/p>\n
McPherson also argued for the importance of the work made in fringe theatres such as the Finborough to the theatre ecology on a larger scale.<\/p>\n
“It’s definitely the start of a worrying trend. For us, the argument for subsidised theatre \u2013 and all other forms of culture \u2013 is true, but where do the subsidised people get their stuff from? From us. Now there’s no rep, if places like us go down, the subsidised theatres won’t have anywhere to get their stuff from,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
McPherson’s comments follow an objection issued by Theatres Trust, which claimed the development could have \u201ca negative impact on the long-term viability” of the Finborough.<\/p>\n
“We are substantially concerned about the adverse effect the development will have on the long-term viability and operation of the Finborough Theatre located on the first floor of the building under the new and additional residential units,” a letter from Theatres Trust planning adviser Ross Anthony said.<\/p>\n
The Theatres Trust also raised concerns about the potential effect on the Finborough Arms pub below the theatre.<\/p>\n
The letter also claimed that the proposals were in contravention to the National Planning Policy Framework and the Core Strategy belonging to Kensington and Chelsea, both of which stress the importance of maintaining cultural facilities.<\/p>\n
It also added that, aside from the long-term impact that the residential development could have, the operation of the theatre could be jeopardised while work is taking place.<\/p>\n
“Construction noise would prohibit rehearsals and performances, particularly matinees, and some of the construction work will prevent access to the upper levels,” the letter said.<\/p>\n
It concluded that the Theatres Trust would continue to object to the application until it is “guaranteed that the Finborough Theatre is fully protected”.<\/p>\n
